February Events and Looking Ahead

February is a short month with lots going on, and we start looking ahead to Spring.

February is Black History Month with special music at RFP. If you wish to celebrate Black History Month from afar, check out The Washington Cathedral’s website at cathedral.org for their various special events.

Our Missionary to West Africa Josh Heikkila will be with us for the February 27th service via Zoom with a presentation of his work in West Africa and a question and answer time.

November is a Time of Giving Thanks. Finally!

After a year’s absence due to COVID, the members and guests of RFP celebrated the annual Harvest Dinner, Saturday night November 13th. Over sixty happy celebrants were treated to great food, music by Carla Grokenberger and the Choir plus a duet by Evangelina Perez-Bechtel and Pastor Sam. It was their piano-guitar debut. Pedal for Protein: On the Road Again

Pedal for Protein: On the Road Again

In the words of the 1980’s Willie Nelson song “On the Road Again”, that merry bunch of bikers named Pedal for Protein (P4P) hit the pavement for the eighth year to raise money for protein-rich food to feed those in need.

RFP’s Dan Sanders, Craig Zimmerman, Kenton De Vries, and nine other riders from Nor Cal churches rode a 350 mile circuitous route starting and ending at Westminster Woods with stops along the way in places such as Inverness, Cloverdale, Sonoma, Novato, and Santa Rosa.

A Debate and Blessing of the Animals Tradition Returns

A Debate and Blessing of the Animals Tradition Returns

October 1st and 2nd was a Noah’s Ark at Rockville Presbyterian Fellowship. Friday featured a debate with the national award winning Solano Community College Debate Team on the topic, “Do All Pets Go to Heaven?”

The debate was a flip of the coin debate where the debaters did not know which side they would take before the debate. The Solano CC debaters were Zachery Waters taking the negative side and Aleea Carrasco taking the affirmative. The pair was coached by Dr. Douglas Mungin Professor of Communication at Solano.

Pastor's Pen -September 2020

During our Tour of the Bible someone asked me to write about human potential. What are we capable of? I could write a book on the topic. (Come to think of it, I have written a book on that topic.) I’m going to lay my cards on the table and say what I think on the subject. I’m hoping to do it in a way that opens conversation. Seriously, you don’t have to agree with me on this. I have reasons for what I think, but I don’t have any need to insist I’m right.

I get the clearest answer to that question from the first chapter of the Gospel of John. John’s Gospel was written to reveal what it should look like when Logos, “the Word,” the pattern and driving force of creation’s evolving story, interpenetrates creation in a human being.

Pastor's Pen - August 2020

Right when we were starting to think we open the Sanctuary for worship, houses of worship have been shut down again. It is looking like we’re in this for the long haul. That is disappointing news. Of course, we want to come back to church, enjoy one another’s company and worship in the ways that have fed our spiritual lives for years. At least for a while though, that’s not meant to be.

My sense of call to this interim ministry is strong. I’m very clear about one thing: we are going to make the most of this moment. I don’t need to tell you, these are stressful times. Every one of us needs the spiritual support we receive from this congregation.

Pastor's Pen - June 2020

A message from our new Interim Pastor Sam Alexander:

Dear New RPF Friends,

I hope you are all doing well during these painful, disruptive, times – times that are though, ripe for enormous and long overdue change – fast change. I would have written that sentence before the George Floyd tragedy. This will be published 5 or so days from now. At the rate things are changing I honestly wonder if that sentence will be out of date by the time you read this. Things are moving that fast. But in those movements, I sense the Spirit at work. That’s always the way the Spirit works – the old must pass away before the new can come.

As I “take the reins” at RPF I thought I would tell you just a few things about myself. I’ll start with something unimportant. When I’m in a group and someone asks, “Tell us something about yourself that most people wouldn’t know,” I tell them I used to engrave stock certificates and foreign currency for US Banknote and before that I was a watchmaker at Tiffany and Co.

Church Library Offers Wide Selection of Books and DVDs

A small selection of the RPF library book and DVD collection made a debut last month on the patio on Sunday mornings. We had many curious browsers and some borrowers who decided to take an item or two home. Summer is a great time to find a special (cool) spot to read a new book or watch a great movie. There are Bible study/meditation guides, inspirational biographies, a variety of hymnals, DVDs and fiction galore for all ages. No fines, ever! Stop by this month and see what we have to offer.
